WIKTIONARY: Etymology
Introduced by Faraday on the suggestion of the Rev. William Whewell, from electro- + -lysis (“a loosening”). Originally of tumors, later (1909) of hair removal.
From Latin electrum, from Ancient Greek ἤλεκτρον (elektron, “amber”) (a natural resin, which - when rubbed - produces static electricity).
From the Ancient Greek λύσις (“a loosening”); compare lysis.
