Early history

Batumi is located on the site of the ancient Greek colony in Colchis called Bathus or Bathys – derived from the Greek phrase bathus limen or bathys limin meaning "deep harbour"

A number of unearthed imported items, fragments of amphorae among them, testify to the Greek   influence there.

 WIKTIONARY: Etymology

From ბათომი, blend of Greek βαθύς (bathus, deep) and suffix -ომი (-omi), which is a common suffix for Georgian geographical places. Compare თორთომი, ცხომი. There are other suggestions, for example, Simon Kaukhchishvili derives the word from Svan ბაჩ (bač', stone).
